The journey to Brookdale Orchard began in 2011 when St. Matthew United Methodist Church joined with neighborhood residents to organize The Rockefeller Park Community Restoration and Development Association to address critical social, political and economic issues effecting the quality of life in our community: inadequate opportunities for employment and training for youth and adults; lack of affordable quality housing; lack of quality food and other retail sources; lack of after school and out of school programming for children and youth; public display of immoral, socially destructive and illegal conduct and activities; inadequate public safety and law enforcement, including threats caused by an inundation of nearly 100 vacant, vandalized and crime harboring properties.

Currently spreading over three city blocks with a vision to establish a produce and by-product market brand of jams, jellies, juices and pastries from the harvest of a community-controlled, income earning fruit and vegetable gardens, Brookdale Orchard rooted in 2016 as a community youth gardening project developed on two vacant parcels of land with a mission to improve the quality of the life and appearance of our neighborhood, and to preserve the integrity of the natural environment as a place for peaceful growth and gathering.
